CHINESE CULTURE AND BUSINESS

How can influence Chinese culture in business, this is a question with many answers.

First of all, we shouldn’t forget that Chinese culture is one of the oldest cultures, with more than 5000 years of history.
Even though, after China entering the WTO, many Chinese business practice are now beginning to align with more conventional methods. Chinese is a very classic and traditional culture and many of the procedures and practices in business will remind us the ancient business practices that people used to do in Europe and North America, 60 or even 80 years ago.

Business relationships are more social than in Europe. If you share your personal life with your Chinese partnership, including family, hobbies, political views, aspirations, your relationship will become closer.

Some interesting facts and tips are given below:

– Seniority is very important.
– Gifts are always appreciated and especially in the smaller cities or towns. (Also    expect to receive gifts from the Chinese partners and associates)
– Having lunch or dinner is quite normal even before doing business together (you are sometime likely to be hosted in a private room).

These are just some little tips about doing business in China but the truth is that it’ s all more complex. For foreign people with european culture like us, some of the Chinese habits are even considered weird, but the first thing you have to do before coming to China is opening your mind and trying to adopt a flexible and comprehensive perspective.

Chinese differences with the rest of the world and it’ s complexity of laws, regulations and taxes, are well explained and justified by it’ s culture and history.
China as a country has gone through several periods. This periods have very well stablished boundaries. Each of this periods have taken China into changes and economic issues.
Nowadays we can still see this periods on the Chinese economic and fiscal system and of course on laws and regulations.

By the way and just as a conclusion you can now find in Shanghai, Chinese people who have european education and it’s very surprising to see that for a very high Chinese population, life, lifestyle, habits and culture is not very far from the western way of living and culture. I suppose China is getting more and more international but it will always have habits and certain culture facts that will remain on their society.
