SOME IDEAS ABOUT CHINA (in no particular order)

To be honest, the first thing that comes to my head if I think of Shanghai today is in the Pere Ubu LP that has released this year: Lady From Shanghai. Well, and in the amazing book Shanghai Baby and in the indispensable Orson Wells movie “The Lady from Shanghai. But if I think a little longer (I mean: Whenever I think of China in general), I have always the same questions in my mind: Are the Chinese people unique (in an emotional or mental sense)? How can we compare the Chinese with other groups? Is the Chinese population really concerned over bellicose rethoric of North Korea? How can we explain the relative academic success of immigrant Chinese students? What is the impact of learning an ographic script on the Chinese people’s way of thinking and perceiving? Are the Chinese more or less family centered than other national groups? How can we understand Chinese negotiating techniques?

It makes me happy to know that within a week I’ll be there, in a country and a city that, in some way, has been present in my life for many years as a distant idea (or just as a person: my sister is Chinese!).
